Is Jacquelyn at fault in the Netflix series? (NCT)

Jacquelyn Scieszka is one of the most notable differences between Book- and Netflix-Canon. Her character is often portrayed alongside Larry Your-Waiter, with the pair acting as 'noble', working against Olaf and his accomplices, throughout the series.

However, there is one point I have picked up on to argue that Jacquelyn caused the heinous events of The Wide Window to occur: Jacquelyn chased Olaf onto the SS Prospero, and this was, arguably, one of the greatest mistakes made in this show.

Of course, as viewers, we understand her intentions:

Bring Olaf to justice, as nothing can happen once he's in Peru (even he knows that!)

Bring back Klaus' half of the Baudelaire spyglass

But this act made Olaf jump into the water below, where he would've made it back to shore, to meet with his troupe, before taking a boat out onto Lake Lachrymose, where The Wide Window's events begin.

If Jacquelyn did NOT get onto the SS Prospero, this would've happened:

Olaf sails away to Peru on the SS Prospero, to (in his words) "wait for the manhunt to die down, eat some cuy"

The Baudelaires go to live with their Aunt Josephine

Poe gets his promotion (probably)

Manhunts take YEARS to die down; Osama Bin Laden's - for example - took 10-15 years, before the US Navy tracked him down to a compound in North-West Pakistan.

So, here's the real genius of this part: by the time Olaf returns because the manhunt has died down, the Baudelaires already have access to their fortune!

As the phrase goes,

"It [was] a wicked thing to do, for a noble reason."

Did she have a choice?

Oh oh oh this is such a good one!!!!! Okay:

They're definately a very explosive pair—Jacquelyn likes to come off as very composed and controlled, but Esmé can get under her skin in a matter of minutes; which she both hates and (if she was to be entirely honest with herself) immensely enjoys because very few people can get to her like that. Esmé just likes causing problems, and their verbal (and physical) sparring matches are infinately entertaining to her

The fact that, on paper, Jacquelyn is the high society lady and Esmé is some nobody from nowhere important is endlessly interesting to me. They go to fancy events together and people that have never met them assume Esmé is Jac and Jac is Esmé based entirely on how they dress/act/etc. It's not that Jac is necessarily bad at it, but even though she was raised to be a Duchess, she just seems so much stiffer and less comfortable in the world of tea parties and endless gossip, while Esmé fits in seamlessly. Esmé's also the only partner Jac's family has ever approved of (despite her lack of land, title, or breeding), and Jac is constantly furious about it

Maybe it's just because I'm a sucker for angst, but I do like to imagine that, despite everything, Jacquelyn did genuinely care about Esmé. She never made this known, of course, and even Esmé just assumed she merely appriciated what they could do for each other—but if you rewatch Esmé's speech at the In Auction in Netflix's TEE and watch for Jac's reaction when she thinks Esmé's coming back to their side... it's sad, lads

DOUBLE Quote Debunk (5 & 6): The Debunk-ly Hallows

"Because you'll be in prison!" ¬ J.S.

...but who, you ask, is 'J.S.' ?

In fact, to fully debunk this quote, we must first refer to the context it has, on both occasions:

J.S. refers to:

Jacquelyn Scieszka

Justice Strauss

And what comes before is very important - Olaf's words, ON BOTH OCCASIONS:

The Wide Window:

O: "Why would I be eating in a prison cafeteria?"

J.S: "Because you'll be in prison!"

The Penultimate Peril:

O: "Why would I change my mailing address to 'Prison'?"

J.S: "Because you'll be in prison!"

Here's my take on it, though it may be considered obvious:

THEORY: The dialogue from TWW was supposed to foreshadow Olaf's temporary jailing in TVV, and the dialogue in TPP was supposed to call back to this, and also hint at the rigged trial.

Every time, Olaf asks them. To quote Klaus,

"We [both] know he's not THAT good of an actor; something's wrong."

So he asks them out of genuine curiosity - he knows he's going to get off scot-free, confirmed from TSS-TPP as The Duo are going to help him out of it, as they see the potential powerhouse of Olaf and Esmé being a couple, despite their Very Frank Dissatisfaction with Olaf. They see Olaf associating himself with the rich and famous, rather than Esmé associating herself with the fire-starting side of the schism once again.

Also, the volunteer to reply is always J.S. - indicating that Olaf knows something they don't, particularly in the case of Justice Strauss.

ANYWAYS. here’s my fan work for the ASOUE Wicked Way Exchange, this time with the correct tag bc I’m dumb. Ha ha. This is for @drpinkky !! A lil background on the piece: I had this scene in my head of Esme and Jacquelyn running into each other and getting into an argument, and Jacquelyn is trying so so so so hard to keep her composure but Esme knows just how to piss her off and says something that makes Jacquelyn SO mad. I liked this idea if their dynamic with each other being the opposite of how they usually are, with Esme being more calm and smug and Jacquelyn being more emotional and angry since those are usually swapped when they’re with other people. Anyways!! Here’s the art! I’m so glad I got to do this!!
